Instagram Advertising

Photo and video sharing app Instagram has come a long way from being the “filter” photography killer app of 2010. Since its acquisition by Facebook in 2012, it boasts over 800 million monthly active users, with some 500 million interacting with it daily. If you’ve ever scrolled down Instagram, or used Instagram Stories, you’ve come across sponsored posts. These posts are images, a carousel of images, or videos inserted into your feed to advertise a product or service; or to encourage an Instagram following. Instagram Advertising or paid marketing revenue is the business model for Instagram; it serves ads to users as a value added service, introducing them to products and services they may otherwise not have known about.

Instagram advertising is highly targeted; which means “more bang for your buck” – more relevant returns for your spend. Instagram can target demographics much in the same way Facebook does – broken down to location, age, gender, interests, and even real-time location. You can target users who regularly travel past a physical store, for example. You may also target users who follow certain other brands or accounts, or who contribute or follow hashtags, much like Twitter. How One Can Advertise on Instagram

As mentioned before, there are two direct ways of advertising on Instagram: using sponsored Instagram posts, or via Instagram Stories. There are other indirect ways; more on that later. Sponsoring Instagram posts means they are delivered via the main feed as a single image, a carousel (several images you scroll horizontally) or as a video.

The advantage to sponsoring a post is that advertisers can embed links into the post, directing traffic to a website or online shop (this is not allowed in normal, unpaid Instagram posts. Instagram only allows one link per profile, in the bio section.)

Instagram sponsored posts can also include product tags, taking users direct to products or services advertised in the post itself. This lowers the barrier between user and product, and they can buy on the spot. Instagram Stories is a relatively new concept for delivering content. Users upload an image or short video, which disappears within 24 hours of posting. In between user content, brands can sponsor videos or images that users can then interact with.

Brands can insert links into copy, or encourage users to “Swipe Up,” taking users to a link of the advertisers’ choice. Other indirect advertising routes are paying influential users with a large following to promote your product or service; however the analytics will not be as precise as advertising direct using the Instagram ad service.
